It’s possible to make macrophotography pictures without specific equipment for this purpose: just use a lens (ideally a fixed focal length such as 50mm) and turn it around. At a workshop with the photo club, I noticed a colleague do this manoeuvre and it reminded me that it was possible to do this; inversion ring are sold to attach the lens on the camera. The advantage is the reduced cost: $3 on Ebay for an adapter ring. The disadvantage: you lose the adjustment features. As the focus on a nearby object reduces the depth of field, you have to close the aperture to compensate. A lens attached with the ring and has no contact with the camera and loses the ability to close the aperture (unless you buy the reversing kit that transfers the signal and it costs $45-50)<\/p>\n
I mounted on drinking glasses a dish filled with water in which I poured cooking oil. I lit the underside with a portable flash reflecting on a colour paper. When I made this picture, I chose the more difficult approach: I was holding the lens with my hand while hovering above the water bowl. I was trying to focus on the bubbles\u2026 The slightest movement made the picture out of focus! So with each breath, the plane of focus changed. It took me “a few” photos to get an acceptable picture…<\/p>\n
When I looked at the result, I had the impression of watching a space landscape. It was as if I were watching the planets of a galaxy!<\/p>\n
