A photographer magnet – A creative surprise

In this story series, I recounted that the St-Jean Hot Air Balloon Festival was a magnet for photographers in the sense that I had noticed other amateurs (or professionals!) like me that evening.

What attracted my attention during the evening was a couple of photographers who were taking photos with the camera handheld and gesticulating… I realized that they might be drawing abstract shapes with the lights of the rides! Interesting … I hadn’t thought about that!

I kept making my pictures with my tripod and later, I thought I could try the same.

I chose this merry-go-round for two reasons:

  • it was the last one in the area and there was no object or building behind it, which assured me to have a black background.
  • the merry-go-round was revolving around an axis and I thought it might be interesting.

I used a relatively small aperture (f/10) so that the light would be slimmer, ISO 200 and a shutter speed of just over 3 seconds.

After several attempts, I realized this picture that I immediately liked (even on the small screen on the camera): I thought it looked like a skater moving on the ice.

It was a creative surprise!
