Vacations are for photos… the warning

During my vacations, I had managed to find me a few abandoned places to photograph. Afterwards, we pursued our trip by taking the road towards Ottawa for the return home. First stop: Ville-Marie in Temiscamingue. This is an interesting area because the mountainous terrain of the Outaouais region made their appearances and added an interesting view (for the photographer of course!).

This region is also recognized for its historic site that contributed to history: the Fort Témiscamingue and the enchanted forest. It is populated with cedar trunks that grew in tortuous way, giving the impression to the first inhabitants that it was haunted woods. The site was first occupied by Native Americans and later, a furs trading post and fortifications were established.

After visiting that place, I had a great interest in a landscape photo, especially since I had noticed some potentially interesting places when we arrived in the area! So towards the end of the day, Champs de Ville-Marie - Web-1we drove up the road back toward Abitibi and found a place where a barn sat in a wheat field. I used my 70-200 lens to compress the landscape while enjoying the light of late afternoon. It was not easy to photograph this barn because it was on the main road from Abitibi to the Outaouais. Needless to say, the road was quite busy!

Once this picture was done, we took the road to Ville-Marie to return to “base”. Obviously, the landscape machine in my head didn’t not stop at a single photo and the “radar” continued to operate along the way …

Champs de Ville-Marie - Web-2That’s when I noticed this tree in golden field where it had been harvested: it was carefully placed between two small forests. The low sun added to the ambiance and the color contrast was accentuated, moreover, traces of machinery leading the eye towards the tree. So I turned around and stopped on the side of the road to make my photograph. That’s when the warning call came 😉 It may be interesting for me to stop and make pictures here and there but it is not necessarily the same for everyone! Maybe the vacations aren’t for photos after all…

I may have exaggerated a bit on the intensity of my photo journey. So I continued the rest of the week by moderating my enthusiasm but it is difficult to stop the picture engine that rolls in my head. The next day we continued our drive to Ottawa and made a stop in Gatineau to spend the night. We organized the evening and the following day to satisfy all parties involved in the trip! A must in visiting this region is Ottawa. I paused the photographer in me during the visits but I let it come out a few times while remaining brief and discrete as not to delay the day: after all, vacations ARE for photos…
